Train #173 departing at 17.35 is the least popular of the overnight trains for foreign visitors. The reason for this is that this is a slow train with a limited number of sleeper berths in an air-conditioned carriage. This train is however cheap with a convenient arrival time and will suit the budget conscious traveller.
The majority of the seating on this train in is fan cooled carriages which can sometimes become uncomfortable in the warmer months of the year.

On the plus side, seats are cheaper on this train than the other later departure and the scheduled arrival time of 05.48 coincides well the departure times of the first direct services from Surat Thani train station to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, at 07.00, and for the service to Koh Tao which departs at 08.30. Passengers can also transport bicycles on Train #173 if there is space in the freight car. To transport a bicycle or other large object you need to go to the freight office to the left hand side of platform 12 at Bangkok train station where you be asked to pay a small additional charge.
